Scotland is renowned for its music, bagpiper etc. yet out of all these things the one thing for which it is famous is Scotch whiskey. Though many countries or cities had worked hard to remake the drink but had not been successful yet. Scotland is the only country which has a perfect blend of the ingredients environment and thus the outcome is a premium class whisky. It has a distinction among other countries as it has taken into the consideration the origin of Whisky, its manufacturing process the traits of malt whisky. Thus, adding the flavor as well as pleasure to enjoy this royal drink.
Origin
Friar John Cor is the man behind this great wonder. He created the first Scotch whisky by the order of King and was known as Aqua Vitae (Water of Life). In the written records it was created in the year 1494. But the distillation was done by Vikings ancient Persians.Ҡ This is supposed to be the first time that Scotland produced whisky.
With the popularity of Whisky, an opportunity was seen by Scottish Government and they levied unreasonable taxes on the production of whisky. , thus resulting in many illegal vendors. However in 1823, The Scottish Parliament passed an Exercise Act in order to control the production and hence making it profitable. Thus the industry for Modern Scotch was originated.
Methods
Over hundred years the process of distillation has not been changed but surely its technique has changed. With the advancement of technologies Modern distilleries came into the picture and thus were able to keep up with the pace of increasing demand and Quality.
Procedure
First of all the barley is soaked, or malted for around three days in water. Make sure that you use the best ingredient also equal consideration should be given to water also. Pure Scottish Spring works as a magical ingredient which makes the Scottish whisky exceptional.
After a few days, barley starting releasing enzymes during the process of germination and thus is quite helpful for the distillation process. Then the procedure of Drying is done with the help of smoldering peat. The richness of the whisky depends upon the peat and thus whisky will be less smoky.
Next the barley is mashed into flour which is known as Grist and then the hot water is poured over it. Adding water will help in the conversion of starch into sugar and thus Wort is made-a strong smelling liquid.
Then is the method of Fermentation which is done in a huge vessel known as wash back. During this method the yeast is added during fermentation process. Thus the sugar reacts with yeast to make alcohol and when this method is complete the substance which is left is Wash
In order to get distilled the wash is transferred to Copper Pot Stills. Thus the wash is heated in order to boil the alcohol resulting in Alcohol Vapor. It is collected in a condenser where it gets cool and thus gets back to its liquid form. After this the liquid is transferred into a second Copper still and for the second time it is distilled and liquid made is known as New make spirit.
Now the process of Maturation begins. In this, the spirit is matured in oak casks. As it becomes older it started absorbing the flavor color of the cask and thus the alcohol level decreases, giving the whisky a fine and rich taste. This process continued for 3 years after that the maturation process stops and whisky is bottled.
